LE RAGNAIE
Le Ragnaie, a testament to the passion and dedication of Riccardo and Jennifer Campinoti, emerged as a relative newcomer to the region in 2002. They embarked on this journey by acquiring a small podere that had been producing wine on a modest scale since 1991. Their commitment to excellence led them to carefully select plots of vines across three distinct zones of Montalcino, a decision that would shape the unique character of their wines.
Le Ragnaie is in the centre of the region at its highest point, lying close to 550m above sea level. Vineyards here are south-facing. Petroso is one of the oldest wine-making zones lying below the Montalcino village, and Castelnuovo dell’Abate lies even further south, facing Monte Amiata, guarding the south-eastern border of the region. In 2015, a new vineyard was added to their collection, this time to the north of the town of Montalcino, in the famed and highly sought-after vineyard of Montosoli, now recognised as a single cru. Their vineyards are managed organically.
Today, the estate spans 15 hectares of vines, each plot expressing its unique identity, a philosophy that underscores their commitment to the diversity of their terroirs. The winemaking process is steeped in tradition, with six Brunelli wines crafted. One is a harmonious blend of fruit from all four distinct zones, while the other five are the pure expression of a single cru. Each wine is meticulously crafted, with fermentation and extended maceration in concrete vats, followed by a patient ageing process for 36 months in large Slavonian oak casks, a testament to Campinoti’s commitment to preserving the authenticity and heritage of their wines.
Riccardo’s gentle approach to winemaking, inspired by his love of Burgundy, gives his wines a charm and accessibility that belies their subtle power. They are allied to a vitality, freshness, and precision born of the fruit from some of the region’s highest and coolest vineyards.
A special estate, making very special wines.
