PODERE SALICUTTI
Nestled in the southeastern hills of Montalcino, Podere Salicutti stands as a beacon of artisanal winemaking and environmental stewardship. Established in 1990 by Sicilian-born Francesco Leanza, the estate quickly garnered acclaim for its commitment to organic viticulture, becoming Montalcino’s first certified organic winery in 1996.
Leanza, a chemical engineer by training, was captivated by the serene beauty of the Tuscan landscape. His vision was clear: to craft wines that authentically express Salicutti’s unique terroir. Embracing a philosophy of minimal intervention, he allowed the land and the Sangiovese grape to speak for themselves, resulting in wines of remarkable elegance and purity.
In 2016, the estate’s stewardship transitioned to Felix and Sabine Eichbauer, proprietors of Munich’s renowned Tantris restaurant. Longtime admirers of Salicutti’s wines, the Eichbauers have continued Leanza’s legacy, deepening the estate’s commitment to sustainable practices. Under their guidance, Salicutti has embraced biodynamic principles, with the 2025 vintage set to be the first certified by respekt-BIODYN.
The estate encompasses 11 hectares, with 4.5 hectares dedicated to Sangiovese vines. These vineyards – Piaggione, Teatro, and Sorgente – are situated at elevations between 420 and 500 meters, benefiting from optimal sun exposure and the cooling influence of nearby Monte Amiata. The soils, rich in calcareous clay and sandstone, contribute to the wines’ complexity and finesse.
Salicutti’s winemaking approach is characterised by meticulous attention to detail. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wines are then aged in a combination of large Slavonian and French oak casks, allowing for a harmonious integration of flavours and a true expression of the vineyard’s character.
With an annual production of approximately 10,000 bottles, Salicutti’s wines are a testament to the harmony between nature and craftsmanship. They have earned accolades from critics worldwide, solidifying the estate’s reputation as a producer of exceptional Brunello di Montalcino.
