Charles Heidsieck in South Africa

October 30, 2026

Since 2026, Rueda Wine Co. has been the exclusive South African representative for Charles Heidsieck, a Champagne House founded in Reims in 1851.

Its founder, Charles-Camille Heidsieck, was 29 when he established the House. The following year, he set out for the United States, where Champagne was still a largely unfamiliar drink. He introduced it to a new audience with confidence and flair, winning over New York society, business leaders and admirers further south. The American press and public took notice, and Charles became known as “Champagne Charlie.”

His work soon reached beyond the United States. On his return to Europe, he developed markets in Belgium and England, and Charles Heidsieck Champagne gained recognition at international exhibitions and royal courts. Travel and enterprise were central to his story, as was a willingness to take the House beyond the familiar markets of France.

That independent approach continues to shape Charles Heidsieck. The House works with growers across Champagne and selects grapes from a broad range of crus. Rather than relying on a single vineyard, the cellar team draws on wines from different villages, grape varieties and harvests. Each cru and variety is vinified separately before blending, allowing the team to work with the particular qualities of each wine.

Reserve wines play a significant role in the House style. Carefully kept from earlier harvests, they give the cellar team additional depth and range when composing a blend. In Brut Réserve, reserve wines can account for around half of the final blend, and many are aged for ten years or more. Their maturity contributes to the Champagne’s richness and creamy texture, while younger wines help preserve freshness.

The cellars beneath Reims are another part of the story. Charles acquired the ancient chalk galleries in 1867. They extend for more than eight kilometres and reach approximately 30 metres below ground. Their naturally cool, humid and steady conditions provide an environment for slow maturation. The cellars are recognised as part of the Champagne region’s UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

In the winery, most components are vinified in stainless steel, which allows the character of each wine to remain clear. Selected wines are aged in old oak barrels, adding a subtle layer of complexity. When the time comes to blend, Chardonnay contributes freshness, Pinot Noir brings structure, and Meunier adds fruit and generosity.
The finished Champagnes balance these elements with the depth gained from reserve wines and extended ageing. Fine bubbles, layered fruit and a rounded texture are hallmarks of the Charles Heidsieck style. Each bottle reflects both the range of Champagne’s vineyards and the House’s long-standing practice of blending across places and years.

We are excited to bring these outstanding Champagnes to South Africa. Charles Heidsieck wines are available to purchase here.
