Benjamin Leroux Meursault Les Vireuils 2022

Benjamin Leroux founded his Beaune label in 2007 after fifteen vintages at Domaine du Comte Armand. Today, he works with estate vineyards and trusted growers. In addition, he uses organic and biodynamic ideas, plus careful cellar work, to give each wine a clear sense of place.

Vineyards

Les Vireuils occupies a high part of the Meursault slope, just below the forest. Leroux works 0.82 hectares with an east to south-east aspect. Chardonnay vines from the mid-1970s grow on pale, limestone-rich soil. As a result, the site gives a fresh and focused style of Meursault.

Winemaking and Maturation

First, Leroux presses the whole bunches and settles the juice. Then, native yeasts start the fermentation. He matures the 2022 in 300-litre barrels, using one new barrel in seven. Next, he keeps the wine in barrel for about 12 to 15 months. Finally, a short rest in tank prepares it for bottling.

Tasting Notes

The wine opens with green apple and orange peel. In addition, fresh herbs, stem ginger, walnut and soft liquorice add detail. The palate feels smooth rather than broad. However, lively acidity and a clear stony line keep it fresh. Finally, the finish feels strong, savoury and well balanced.
