Benjamin Leroux founded his Beaune label in 2007 after fifteen vintages at Domaine du Comte Armand. Today, he works with estate vineyards and trusted growers. In addition, he uses organic and biodynamic ideas, plus careful cellar work, to give each wine a clear sense of place.

Vineyards

Les Vireuils lies high on the Meursault slope, just below the forest. Leroux works 0.82 hectares of Chardonnay vines from the mid-1970s. The east to south-east aspect and pale limestone soil create a cool setting. Therefore, this vineyard gives a fresher and more focused style than many village Meursault wines.

Winemaking and Maturation

First, Leroux presses the whole bunches and settles the juice. Then, native yeasts start the fermentation. He matures the wine for about 12 to 15 months in 300-litre barrels with little new oak. Next, he moves it to tank for another four to six months. Finally, this gentle process protects the fruit and mineral character.

Tasting Notes

First, cool pear, green apple and citrus lead the aroma. Then, orange peel, nuts and fine spice add depth. The palate balances ripe fruit with fresh acidity and a light chalky grip. Meanwhile, the clean mineral line keeps the wine focused. Finally, the finish feels long, fresh and calm.
