Maison Thiriet is located opposite the Château de Comblanchien, in Côte-d’Or, in the heart of Côte-de Nuits , in Burgundy . After years of experience in both production and sales, Canadian-born cellar master Matt Chittick and adopted Burgundian Camille Thiriet exercised prudence and ambition to realize a long-term dream, that of producing Burgundy wines under their own label. They met while working for Domaine de Bellene. 2016 was Maison Thiriet’s first vintage, it was produced in a small 20m2 garage and only four barrels of Bourgogne Blanc and three barrels of Côte de Nuits Villages were produced.

Winemaking and Maturation

Everything is done in an artisanal manner, pumping in a bucket, crushing with a foot, ratchet press. No inputs or native yeasts are added. The bottles are labelled and waxed by hand.

Tasting Notes

This was the cuvée that started it all—the first wine that Thiriet released. Aux Montagnes is a four-hectare parcel directly below the Comblanchien château and quarry. Sited on the belly of the slope at 260 metres—where the Côte de Nuits 1er Crus normally sit (just saying)—there is only 25cm of clay-limestone before the vines tap directly into the bedrock. The clay here is quite red, with a high iron content. Thiriet works with a parcel of vines from Nicolas Potel’s holdings planted in the 1970s. She uses fewer bunches for this vineyard as the stems add a lot of tannins here. The result is a more fleshy, hedonistic style of Burgundy (yet still fine-boned!) with excellent density and waves of sweet fruit.
