Peyre Rose Clos des Cistes 2009

Marlène Soria created Peyre Rose on the heights above Saint-Pargoire and harvested her first wine grapes in 1988. Today, garrigue surrounds the organically farmed estate and protects its distinctive setting. She gives the wines exceptionally long cellar ageing, mainly in tanks and large old foudres. As a result, each release reaches the market with mature complexity and notable freshness.

Vineyards

Clos des Cistes comes from the highest part of the Peyre Rose estate. Syrah leads the blend, while Grenache and Mourvèdre add breadth and savoury detail. The vines grow on hard, stony clay-limestone slopes above Saint-Pargoire. Because the ground holds little water, it gives the wine concentration, firm structure and a fresh mineral line.

Winemaking and Maturation

First, the team hand-picks the organically grown fruit. Then, partial destemming, a long maceration and regular pump-overs build colour and texture. Next, Marlène Soria matures the wine for almost ten years, mainly in tank with a smaller share in large foudres. Finally, a long bottle rest allows the tannins and aromas to settle before release.

Tasting Notes

The 2009 opens with blackberry, plum and a gentle floral lift. Then, smoke, liquorice, roasted spice and dark chocolate add mature complexity. The palate feels concentrated and velvety, with integrated tannins and a fine streak of freshness. Meanwhile, notes of garrigue and black olive keep the ripe fruit savoury. Finally, the finish feels long, smoky and poised.
