Scions of Sinai Swanesang Syrah 2022

Scion refers to the top part of a plant/vine or can also mean ‘the descendant of’. Sinai refers to the ‘Sinai Hill’ which is a granite hill in the lower Helderberg region. Bernhard Bredell used these words to create the name Scions of Sinai which is also applicable given that he is the 7th generation (descendant) of Bredell wine farmers.

Scions of Sinai Wines mainly focus on curating the uniquely located vineyards of the Lower Helderberg region around a granite hill. Bernhard hopes that his wines express the vineyard, it’s soil and the vintage clearly and purely.

Winemaking and Maturation

In order to produce great wine, one has to develop a deep understanding of terroir combined with precision viticulture. Winemaking I believe, should involve the combination of tradition, modern technology, science, art and passion. The grapes were fermented on the skins to extract the grape flavours, colour and tannins. Thereafter the wine was matured in the finest French oak barrels for 19 months, blended and bottled.

Tasting Notes

Christian Eedes (Winemag): “Quite pronounced tar-like reduction on the nose before red and blackberries, violets and pepper. The palate has excellent fruit purity, lively acidity and powdery tannins. Direct without being too linear, refined and harmonious. But for that reduction, this might have rated even higher… 95/100.”
