The Swerwer Red Blend 2021 is a wine with natural purity and elegance. The cooler 2021 vintage resulting in even more finesse and austerity. It is unbelievably drinkable thanks to Cinsault and Grenache contributing to more than 85% of the blend. Delicate rose petal leads to fresh berry and aromatic fynbos aromas. The palate is loaded with juicy red and dark berry fruit and an earthy edge of pomegranate and black tea. Tinta Barocca completes this traditional Swartland blend by adding darker tones and a fleshy and dense structure with gripping tannins, finishing fresh and tight. A unique and charismatic wine, quite pleasurable in its youth, but worth the wait with further aging.

Vineyards

Cinsault and Grenache are sourced from vineyards growing on well-drained, granite soils. Cinsault was the work-horse grape and widely planted, but of the rare Grenache only a few old vineyards remain. Tinta Barocca has proven itself in the Swartland already for decades as a robust variety. Here it is sourced from a warmer clay– rich vineyard.

Winemaking and Maturation

Cinsault and Grenache are perfect partners and natural yeasts completed a partially whole-bunch co-fermentation. Extractions are light with punch-downs done early during fermentation. Tinta Barocca is vinified separately and blended together into large old foudres allowing the flavours to marry and wine to mature. Bottled after 11 months with only a light filtration and minimum use of sulphites.
