Vineyards
Craig and his team farm the fruit using organic and biodynamic methods. They are in the Piketberg area in northern Swartland and have started planting vines as of 2018.
Winemaking and Maturation
Craig is proud of making natural wines. Thus, his approach includes early picking, a lack of additions (minute amounts of SO2 are infrequently used), and no fining or filtration.
Tasting Notes
We change the label every year to best suit the feeling I think the wine is giving.
The El Bandito Cortez 2023 is a pure, visceral expression of Chenin from a single vineyard in the Paardeberg. Craig and Carla Hawkins have been working in this vineyard since Testalonga’s inception, and it always yields great acidity and a low pH – producing wines that evolve beautifully. This is a special Chenin for the connoisseur who appreciates refinement, detail, finesse and energy.
