DOMAINE ALVINA PERNOT
Taut and Mineral Laden Chardonnay
Alvina Pernot is one of the most exciting producers of white Burgundy today. Based in Puligny-Montrachet with some incredible vineyards, this is a name to watch – creating a taut and mineral style of Chardonnay.
Alvina Pernot, granddaughter of famed Paul Pernot, is a young vigneron born and raised in Puligny-Montrachet. Alvina grew up close to the domaine as her father and uncle managed the family domaine throughout her childhood. It was in 2018 when Alvina and her husband Philippe Abadie decided to create their domaine.
Alvina and Philippe work with their own land as well as purchase grapes from the family vineyards of Domaine Paul Pernot. From the 2021 vintage, the wines are made in their own, newly built cellar in Puligny-Montrachet. Production has been kept small at roughly 25 000 bottles across 25 cuvées, making exclusively white wines with an intense focus on sites within Puligny-Montrachet and an increasing number of Premier and Grand Cru parcels.
The wines of Domaine Alvina Pernot and Domaine Paul Pernot share many of the same vineyards, however, the styles are very different. Alvina produces wines that are lean, focused, and laser-sharp capturing a deep mineral core and intensity of fruit, they are utterly superb.
In the vineyard, picking is done at full ripeness, with a conscious decision to retain freshness. Once in the winery, pressing is done gently in a vertical press and, new oak is kept low whilst the use of amphorae and glass vessels are used in the ageing process. The wines are not bâtonnaged and sulphur is kept to a minimum.
