Georges Laval
Based in the village of Cumières in the Vallée de la Marne, Georges Laval is one of the reference points of grower Champagne. The domaine has been in the Laval family since the 17th century, with Vincent Laval now at the helm, continuing and refining his father, Georges’s work.
The estate farms just over 2.5 hectares of vineyards, planted to Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. From an early stage, Laval moved away from chemical treatments, and the vineyards have been farmed organically since 1971 – long before it became fashionable in Champagne. Today, the focus remains on meticulous vineyard work, with low yields and careful attention to each parcel.
In the cellar, the approach is equally restrained. Fermentations take place with indigenous yeasts, the use of sulphur is minimal, and dosage is kept low or omitted entirely depending on the cuvée. Each wine is vinified parcel by parcel, often in stainless steel and neutral oak, allowing the character of the site to remain clearly expressed.
The resulting Champagnes are precise, textural, and deeply vinous, with a quiet intensity rather than overt power. They speak more to place and farming than to house style – structured, nuanced wines that reward attention and evolve beautifully with age.
Production is extremely limited, and availability is correspondingly tight. As with many of the most thoughtful growers in Champagne, these are allocated and rarely seen in volume.
