Maison Valette
Maison Valette is one of the great reference points for Chardonnay in Burgundy. Based in the Mâconnais, the domaine has built a devoted following for wines that combine generosity, depth and unmistakable mineral character.
The estate is closely associated with Philippe Valette, who took over part of the family domaine in the early 1990s and helped move the vineyards towards organic and biodynamic farming. Today, Maison Valette is recognised as one of the most distinctive voices in southern Burgundy, working with old vines across the Mâconnais and Pouilly-Fuissé.
The vineyard work is central to the domaine’s identity. Farming is organic and follows biodynamic principles, with a focus on achieving full maturity while preserving balance and vitality. In a warmer part of Burgundy, this careful work allows the wines to carry both richness and freshness.
In the cellar, the approach is patient, natural and traditional. Fermentations are spontaneous, sulphur is used minimally, and the wines are aged for extended periods on their lees in old oak barrels. Depending on the cuvée and vintage, élevage can last several years, giving the wines their distinctive texture, complexity and quiet power.
What defines Maison Valette is the depth of its Chardonnay. These are not fragile or superficial wines. They are layered, saline and textural, often showing notes of citrus, stone fruit, nuts, honey, spice and crushed limestone. Yet beneath that richness, there is always freshness, persistence and a strong mineral backbone.
Production is small, and the wines have become increasingly sought-after by lovers of Burgundy. They occupy a unique place in the region: unmistakably Mâconnais, yet with a seriousness and longevity that set them apart as some of Burgundy’s most compelling white wines.
