STELLA DI CAMPALTO

San Giuseppe and Stella di Campalto

The San Giuseppe Winery takes its name from the sharecropping estate established by Giuseppe Martelli in 1910. Abandoned in 1940, the estate was acquired by Stella di Campalto in 1992. Stella is deeply devoted to Montalcino’s rhythms, culture, and beauty.

The 13-hectare San Giuseppe estate, a sanctuary of nature, includes 6.7 hectares of vineyards. A significant amount of time and resources are dedicated to maintaining the natural ecosystem in and around the vineyards, a testament to our commitment to producing pure, unrepeatable wines of their terroir and year of origin. Each plot is a small cru with its own distinct character, and each wine is vinified separately in large oak vats. The estate, a pioneer in sustainable winemaking, has been certified organic since 1996 and has employed biodynamic methods since 2002, ensuring the highest quality in every bottle.

Vineyards are farmed biodynamically using only manure and silice with no irrigation. Grapes are hand-picked in small crates, de-stemmed, and transferred into the 30 quintal oak vats to ferment. Nothing is added before, during, or after the arrival of the bunch except sulphur in minimum doses.

Stella di Campalto remarks the following about her journey with San Giuseppe;  “The farm and the rugged and poetic lands that surround it were given to me as a wedding gift. It was 1992 in San Giuseppe. A ruin and an abandoned land for over half a century. From the moment I came to live with my family in this corner of the Val d’Orcia, below Castelnuovo dell’Abate, a part of Tuscany positioned between Mount Amiata on the east and the Maremma hills on the west, I have been quietly following its needs day after day.”
