THAMNUS
Nestled in the cool maritime climate of the Overberg, Thamnus is a small, focused South African estate dedicated exclusively to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The project reflects a growing movement within the Cape toward site-driven wines that emphasise precision, restraint, and transparency of terroir.
The vineyards lie in the rugged landscape of the Overberg region, where proximity to the Atlantic Ocean moderates temperatures and allows grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity. The soils, which are mostly shale, clay, and decomposed granite, allow for wines that are both structured and tense.
Grapes are harvested by hand, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are handled gently in the cellar to preserve purity and site expression. Oak is used sparingly, providing structure without overwhelming the wines.
Production remains small, allowing for meticulous attention in both the vineyard and cellar. The resulting wines show a refined balance among fruit, freshness, and texture, capturing the elegance that the Cape’s coolest sites are increasingly capable of producing.
At their best, the wines combine crystalline fruit, subtle savoury complexity, and a distinct maritime freshness. They represent a compelling example of modern South African Chardonnay and Pinot Noir: precise, age-worthy, and rooted in place.
