Porseleinberg Syrah 2016
Winemaking and Maturation
Porseleinberg is home to a groundbreaking Cape Syrah that exemplifies the essence of terroir-driven, authentic wine. The extremely rugged and dry schistous mountain doesn’t invite easy viticulture, but of course, extreme terroir produces extreme wine! The ever-humble and hospitable Callie Louw is the farmer, winemaker and custodian of this special vineyard. At home on his John Deere tractor, Callie produces a profound and frankly delicious wine. Callie also makes his own labels using an old-school letterpress printing machine which he is always happy to show off to visitors.
Mid ruby colour in the glass, the nose is expansive and intense, unfurling with notes of hedgerow fruit, black pepper, bay leaf and violets. The palate is bright with summer fruits and precise in structure. There is the expected power of fruit yet it is more focused and less heavy than in previous years.
