Nicolas Joly returned, leaving behind a career in finance, to the fabled Coulée de Serrant in 1977. The celebrated vineyard, which comprises its own appellation, was planted in the 1130s. At first, he implemented modern agricultural methods, but after three years, he became troubled by subtle but noticeable alterations in the vineyards. After reading a book on biodynamics that he picked up by chance, he became fascinated by the concept and embarked on an experimental reconversion of a small area of vineyards. Rapidly convinced by the results, he started to implement biodynamic practices across the estate and has been Demeter and Ecocert certified since 1984.

Les Vieux Clos, Savennieres, Loire Valley, France
Les Vieux Clos in Savennieres is an ancient vineyard site planted to Chenin overlooking the Loire River. The Joly family's biodynamic viticulture practice over many years results in wines that transparently convey this unique site.
Thanks to naturally low yields and severe grape selection at harvest with multiple passes to ensure ripeness, the wines are rich, golden in colour and highly concentrated.
Fermented naturally with 100% indigenous yeasts with no temperature control. The wine goes through full malolactic fermentation naturally, followed by a period of ageing for 12 months in used oak barrels. No fining or filtering before bottling.
The wine provides expressive, exotic notes of ginger and coriander balanced with an accent of salinity. Les Vieux Clos is often considered the most aromatic of the three wines.
Joly’s golden-yellow Savennières Les Vieux Clos is pure and elegant on the herbal and flinty nose, displaying spicy lemon/lemon grass and ripe, concentrated fruit aromas. The finish is very precise, fresh and aromatic but also full of elegance, salt and stimulation.
